The mind-body relationship is cultivated through the practice of Pilates. Joeseph Pilates was quoted saying the above (well known) phrase and by all accounts practicing the systems will give you the results as quoted.
This is the first of the benefits received by Pilates students. With todays lifestyle the majority of us working or living over machines means the body is conforming to unnatural positions losing essential motor skills and fitness. Take driving for example, sitting down in a non-erganomical seat with our arms forward rounding our shoulders, weakens our postural spine, abdominals and legs not to mention the loss of fitness because of our reliance on this mode of transport. Pilates helps in todays society by overcoming our bad postural habits due to the technologies we all enjoy and have come to live with by strengthening the body’s core (Powerhouse), elongating and decompressing the spine allowing the body’s nervous system to function more efficiently. Holding yourself with better poise will instantly give you more confidence, feel taller, straighter and sexier.
This is the next benefit noticeable for yourself and by others. When one becomes conscious of their movements, one becomes proficient with their movements. Pilates works a lot with the ‘Powerhouse’ the core of the body, strengthening, tightening and learning to initiate movement from the core. Disassociation and lubrication of the limbs and joints creates a feeling of being more limber, lighter & centered with control. You will start to see that your clothes will fit and look better, you will have clearer skin, better muscle tone and more strength.
Through commitment to regular practice & nutrition the above statement is achievable and rewarding on so many levels it will literally blow your mind!
Joseph Hubertus Pilates devised and founded a system of physical & mental conditioning that he practiced and refined throughout his life and which he throughly believed in to his core .
As a child that was often sick with rickets, rheumatic fever and asthma, Joseph became obsessed with mastering his body through intimate knowledge of it’s mechanics gained by trying many physically demanding activities. And as he was also an intelligent and curious man he studied Eastern & Western philosophies and the Ancient’s demanding exercise regimes. His learnt knowledge lead him to explore and shape his system which evolved throughout his life and to which is currently being used as traditionally practiced or modified slightly but working within the same principles.
Joseph was living in England at the time World War One broke out and as such was detained in a camp on the Isle of Man with other German Nationals. During his intern he taught and refined his systems working with the disabled, sick and victims of wartime diseases.
His systems of exercises and apparatuses became recognised throughout Germany and the USA which afforded him the opportunity to work with world class sportsmen & women particularly from the dance community. The dancers experienced and witnessed so many positive results with their bodies in both rehabilitation & performance that Pilates and dancing are now synonymous with each other.
Joseph Pilates was a man with such foresight and belief in his systems that he literlally envisioned a future of healthful well beings on a global basis. His drive to see his systems used globally manifested so much so that he created numerous apparatuses and over 600 exercises, opened studios, worked with well known sports individuals and taught the system to believers who would carry on his message and systems to become known and practiced worldwide.
The group Pilates classes are 60 minutes of mat only, following the classical series of exercises that will strengthen your core, decompress your spine & lubricate your joints. The classes will move at a high tempo to music to get your body moving and sweating. All levels welcome but these classes are not for the faint of heart.
Pilates is often confused with Yoga or is considered in the same league of discipline and many people expect similar exercises where they feel that inflexibility will be a hindrance. However, as far as this is from the truth, Yoga & Pilates complement each other as does Pilates and other sports. Classes are for all levels and as you progress with your strength and stamina, you will be able to work with variations of the exercises so you wont get stagnant or bored.
